Victor A. Levin, M.D., ChairmanVictor A. Levin, M.D., Chairman (specialty, Neuro-Oncology) is a recognized expert in brain tumor research and treatment. He is currently Professor of Neuro-Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (M.D. Anderson Cancer Center) and also holds the Bernard W. Biedenharn Chair for Cancer Research. He is the past Chairman of the Department of Neuro-Oncology and Director of the Brain Tumor Center at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Levin has authored more than 320 publications and serves as Associate Editor for several highly respected peer-reviewed journals. He is also the Founder and first President (1995-97) of the Society for Neuro-Oncology. He has been awarded the Farber Foundation Award in Neuro-Oncology, Heath Memorial Award for Cancer Care, and is cited in The Best Doctors in America. Prior to joining M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1988, Dr. Levin was Professor in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. He received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and completed his residency and fellowship programs at Massachusetts General Hospital. Prior to his residency, he was Staff Associate in the Experimental Therapeutics Branch at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Levin is widely respected for his early studies defining the pharmacokinetics of anticancer drugs in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, as well as for chemoradiation and chemotherapy regimens for the treatment of gliomas. His current research involves the development of new anticancer agents that selectively inhibit signal transduction pathways that are critical to tumor proliferation but are not critical to the survival of normal, nonmalignant cells and tissues. |
